5 Scholarships Every Nigerian Secondary School Student Should Know About in 2026

Opportunities exist. The challenge is that they are rarely announced loudly. This article names five scholarships that are genuinely accessible to Nigerian secondary school students — including our own — and tells you exactly what each one requires.

1. BAG Scholar Initiative 2026 — BAG Foundation

I begin with our own because I want to be transparent: this is the programme I have built, and I believe in it. The BAG Scholar Initiative awards ₦100,000 across three scholars — Gold (₦50,000), Silver (₦30,000), and Bronze (₦20,000) — to Nigerian secondary school students in JSS3 through SS3 who demonstrate academic merit, financial need, and thoughtful engagement with the essay theme.

Deadline: 31 August 2026 · Apply: applications@bagf.jrzp.org · Full details: bagf.jrzp.org/scholar-initiative

2. MTN Foundation Science and Technology Scholarship

The MTN Foundation has historically offered scholarships targeting students in science and technology-related fields. The programme has reached tens of thousands of Nigerian students and typically requires strong academic performance in science subjects. Check the MTN Foundation website directly for the most current application window and requirements, as these change annually.

3. Shell Nigeria Scholarship

Shell’s scholarship programmes in Nigeria have historically focused on students in oil-producing communities and those pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The application process is competitive and documentation-heavy — students should start preparing well in advance. Visit the Shell Nigeria website for current eligibility and deadlines.

4. Dangote Foundation Scholarship

The Aliko Dangote Foundation has offered scholarships for Nigerian students at various levels of education. Requirements and availability vary by cycle. Monitor the foundation’s official communications and website for current opportunities — applications typically open once a year.

5. State Government Scholarships

Every Nigerian state has a scholarship board — and most offer annual awards for indigenes at secondary and tertiary level. These scholarships are frequently undersubscribed because students and parents do not know they exist or do not pursue them. Visit your state’s Scholarship Board website or office directly. Bring your school results, birth certificate, and state of origin documentation when you visit.
